1. The Peninsula

The stately Peninsula, erected in the 1920's the heyday of colonialism, has a charm and charisma to it that most other hotels would like to bottle and buy. The building itself is recognized as one of the best in Hong Kong and has found its way onto many tourist itineraries. The Peninsula is arguably the height of hotel luxury in the city. Spacious and tasteful suites are attractive, if a little lacking in character. Be sure to ask for a room in the original building, otherwise you may be stored in the charmless new towers.

One of the highlights of the hotel is the outdoor swimming pool, which offers fascinating views of the banks of skyscrapers that surround the hotel. Slated to close in Mid-2007, get there now before the wrecking balls do.
