Cheap Hong Kong Hotels

The Best Hong Kong Hotels for Less than $75

By , About.com Guide

Cheap Hong Kong hotels can be hard to find, at least those that don’t come crawling with cockroaches. Below, you’ll find our top five picks for cheap Hong Kong hotels, which are all full service hotels with air con and certified cockroach free.

All of the hotels below are available for $75 (Double) or less; however, this is generally only through Zuji.com, which we offer booking links to below. If you intend to book with the hotels directly, expect to be quoted a slightly higher rack rate and be prepared to bargain If you want less than $75, you need to look at guesthouses and hostels.

1. Silka West Kowloon Hotel

One of the smarter hotels in this price range, the Dorsett’s rooms are little different to many of Hong Kong’s pricier mid-range hotels, with individual bedside lamps, desks and bright windows looking out onto the crowded streets below. You’ll also find a full range of facilities from in-room safe to on-tap broadband (for a price). The downside is that there is only just enough floor space to park your luggage. The Dorsett isn’t smack bang in the centre, but still within strolling distance of the maze of markets around Mongok and just a couple of minutes from the nearest MTR.

2. Bishop Lei International

The Bishop Lei might be run by the local Catholic Dioscese, but you don’t need to make mass every morning to enjoy this budget bet on Hong Kong Island. Rooms come in a variety of price ranges, from pokey holes to suites with Harbour views, and with a full renovation underway the retro seventies look should soon give way to more a stylish design. Extra bonuses include an outdoor pool and a basic fitness room. Set the in the sleeper suburb of Mid-Levels half way up Victoria Peak, the hotel is well placed next to the mid-levels escalator, meaning a short slide, sweat free, down to the heart of Central.

3. The Anne Black YWCA

Don’t worry about the name, this place is neither a hostel or exclusively for women, although it does a feature a floor reserved only for female guests. Rooms are surprisingly spacious for this price range, if expectedly spartan, although they do feature TVs and mini-bars. Be warned, not all rooms are ensuite, so unless you like sharing the soap with strangers, book a room with a private bathroom. Many people enjoy the safety of the building, which, thanks to excellent staff, is a cut above some of the city’s more dingy budget options. One drawback is the walk to the MTR, which is relatively far and in Hong Kong’s soup like humidity this can be a problem.

4. The Imperial Hotel

An outstanding location right at the heart of the neon on Nathan Road is your main reason for staying at the Imperial, besting the location of many more upmarket options. Unfortunately, the good news runs out quickly inside, and despite a snazzy looking lobby, rooms are more potluck, and at best can be somewhat tired at worst downright dingy. The rooms are very slowly being refurbished and it’s a must to insist on a refurbished room, and an even better bet to arrive first and insist on seeing your room before handing over your hard earned cash. Best used if a central location is a must.

5. Evergreen Hotel Hong Kong

Popular with backpackers who need a break from their regiment of crammed in like sardines dorm rooms, the Evergreen regularly draws positive opinions for the friendliness of the staff - especially encouraging when other Hong Kong budget hotels can often treat you like something that crawled in through the cat flap. Rooms are almost hostel basic, including box rooms, without windows, which won’t suit those who are claustrophobic, or enjoy sunshine. They do all have private bathrooms, TVs and free in-room broadband, and are thankfully, wholly smoke free and scrupulously clean. Best of all, it’s just seconds from the electricity of Nathan Road.
