One of the few upmarket hotels set in the heart of Western District, this is a great area to see a more traditional Hong Kong; stuffed with traditional tea shops, seafood joints and markets. Yet it’s still just fifteen minutes walk, or one MTR stop, from Central’s skyscrapers. The hotel itself is remarkably well equipped for this price range, featuring a rooftop pool, gym and wifi. Rooms are masterfully modern and minimalist, painted in wall to wall bright white and featuring LCD TVs and baths. Pricier rooms boast harbour views. The Jen can be absolute steal, but if you want to get the rock bottom prices you’ll need to book early.

The Cosmo is a sharply dressed boutique hotel set across the road from the famous Happy Valley Racecourse and minutes from the frantic shopping centre of Causeway Bay. Rooms, while small, have a hip designer appeal, featuring crisp greens, pastel yellows and a less attractive lurid orange, and are fitted with some impressive amenities, including 20-inch flat screen TVs. While the rooms live up to their four-star billing, the hotel’s boutique status means you’ll find few extra facilities and there is no gym or swimming pool.

Set in a ugly duck skyscraper in between the drinking dens of Wan Chai and the shopping lanes of Causeway Bay, the Charterhouse has just about everything you could want on its doorstep. There is little here in the way of frills, but the Charterhouse does offer solid, reliable three star service and standards at very fair prices. Rooms come in that classic nineties combination of dark woods and soothing pastels, and while not modern, are in no way offensive. Some rooms have been renovated.

If $100 bucks still sounds too steep for your budget, the Dorsett Seaview can often shave 50% off that price, although in return you’ll need to shave a little off your expectations. The rooms are thoroughly basic, with a bed, TV and a cursory picture hanging on the wall making up the full contents. The Dorsett offers full hotel service, including a restaurant with views over the Harbour and a shuttle bus service plying the Yau Ma Tei location and Kowloon Station, where you can catch the airport express.

The Ramada Hong Kong is a dependable, if uninspiring choice set in the traditional Western District. The hotel is about five minutes from the nearest MTR (Sheung Wan), which is one stop from Central. Rooms are somewhat retro, sporting dated browns and beiges and beds that are soft as a chopping block, but you’ll find all of the expected amenities, including mini bar, safe and internet access, as well as a full range of hotel services. With 317 rooms, the Ramada is a good back-up bet, if the no vacancy signs are lit up over the city. Be sure to ask for a non-smoking floor, some of the rooms smell like they’re been barbecued.
