Hong Kong today mourned the victims of the Sichuan earthquake disaster with a 3-minute silence, while the Chinese national flag and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Flag continue to be hung at half-mast in the city. The tragedy has touched many Hong Kongers deeply.
Over 40,000 people died in the earthquake, a figure that is expected to rise, while the number of injured is estimated at near 300,000, the actual figure may well be substantially higher. Over five million people have been made homeless, and access to shelter, clean water and food is poor in many places.
The Chinese Government has made an appeal to the international community for tents and assistance in long-term reconstruction. If you wish to assist, the Seattle Times has a comprehensive list of organisations and NGOs, and their functions. Elsewhere, Sara Naumann, About's Guide to China, has up to date information on the ongoing relief efforts, as well as links to relevant organisation.
