10th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Handover Events

2007 marks ten years since the 1997 Hong Kong handover. Anniversary events are planned for the whole year, however the main events are scattered through June and July, culminating on July 1st, the exact anniversary of the Hong Kong handover. With over 400 events, we have hand-picked some of the best throughout June and July, below. All events are free unless otherwise stated. We will include events as they are confirmed.

June 23rd

  • The Dazzle of Buddha

Taking place at the spectacular Giant Buddha and attached Po Lin Monastrey on Lantau Island. There will be a blessing ceremony, fireworks, dragon dances, as well as stalls and food dedicated to the Islands culture.

  • The International Dragon Races

June 26th

  • Symphony of Lights 10th Anniversary Celebrations

Hong Kong’s symphony of lights is the worlds biggest lights show, nightly buildings on Hong Kong harbor light-up in the world’s biggest light and sound show. In celebration of the Hong Kong handover anniversary 10 more buildings will be added to the celebrations. Simply spectacular.

Time: Nightly 8pm

June 30th

  • A Grand Variety Show

One of the bigger events on the calendar, and held at the cavernous Hong Kong convention and exhibition centre, the grand variety show featuring some of Hong Kong’s and China’s best orchestras and performance groups.

Hong Kong 10th Anniversary – July 1st

  • HKSAR 10th Anniversary Reunification Cup

Not the catchiest title, but it may well be worth catching the game. The China National soccer team will pit their skills against an as yet unnamed opponent, although one imagines it is unlikely to be Britain.

Time: 12:30pm
Venue: Hong Kong Stadium, Causeway Bay
Price: $10

  • Hong Kong 10th Anniversary Parade

The big event, and one not to be missed. Likely to be similar to a Chinese New Year parade. The route will be from Causeway Bay and Happy Valley stadium to the Southorn Playground in Wan Chai. Performers and floats from Hong Kong and China will parade along, followed by the rarely seen Peoples Liberation Army garrison of Hong Kong. No British participation has been mentioned at this time.
