Hong Kong is often used as a base for hopping off to other locations in the region. While Hong Kong remains one of the cheapest places in the region, if not the cheapest, for long-haul international flights. Shenzhen Airport, just across the border, is often cheaper for regional travel and offers more variety for travel within China. So is it cheaper and easy to fly from Shenzhen Airport? We find out.
Domestic Flights
Yes, its cheaper!
Shenzhen Airport is the smart choice for travel to China. Flights to China from Hong Kong tend to be at least 30% more expensive than Shenzhen and the selection of destinations is much less. Shenzhen Airport flies to over 50 Chinese destinations, compared with the 10 or so served from Hong Kong. Some key carriers flying from Shenzhen are Shenzhen Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines.
South-East-Asia Regional Flights
Yes, its cheaper!
Shenzhen has started flying to more South-East Asian destinations in recent years, although its important to note that Hong Kong still has a far better selection for regional travel. Destinations also change frequently, so its a good idea to check ahead for options. Currently, Singapore, Tokyo and Vietnam are served, three destinations which are likely to remain permanent, While Seoul and Kuala Lumpur, also currently served, are likely to change. Regional flights from Shezhen tend to be, on the whole, slightly cheaper than Hong Kong. However, airlines flying from Hong Kong often have promotions and ticket sales giving them the edge. The advice shop around.
International Flights
No, its more expensive!
Shenzhen has started serving a select number of destinations in Europe and North America, most notably Chicago and Amsterdam, there is however no reason at all to use Shenzhen as an international departure point. Lost bags, delayed flights and comic miscommunication are just a taste of the problems that await international departures. That said, things are improving, however, with Hong Kong Airport, the worlds best, 30 minutes down the road offering cheaper flights and a better selection of destinations, its better to stay away from Shenzhens international offerings.
