Hong Kong Bus Network Advice

By Rory Boland, About.com

The Hong Kong bus network is extremely comprehensive with a dense network of routes covering the whole region. Most of these routes won’t be needed by the average tourist, with the MTR system generally a quicker way to reach the city’s main sights. That said, there are a number of sights and areas only reachable via the Hong Kong bus network.

What to Expect from Hong Kong Buses

Hong Kong buses are almost all modern vehicles with air conditioning and disabled access. Most buses are double decker. Payment on buses is either via Octopus Card, or with exact change into the automated payment box at the front of the bus. The fare will be displayed on the box and at many bus stops. Drivers do not generally speak English.

When Do the Buses Operate

Most bus routes operate between 6a.m. and midnight. There are also night buses, marked N.

How Do I Know When to Get Off the Bus

Almost all buses have electronic information screens on the ground floor announcing the next stop in both Chinese an English.

Where Are the Main Hong Kong Bus Terminus

On Hong Kong Island, the main bus terminus is in Central at Exchange Square and attached to Hong Kong Station and the IFC Shopping Mall. There is also a major bus terminus in Admiralty, underneath Pacific Place on Queensway. On Kowloon side, the main bus terminus is in front of the Star Ferry Pier in Tsim Sha Tsui.
