By Rory Boland, About.com

While there is plenty of flights on offer, getting a cheap flight from Hong Kong to Beijing is no easy task. Take a look at our top tips to make sure that you get the best value cheap flights from Hong Kong to Beijing.

You should expect to pay between $400 and $500 for a return, including taxes, between Hong Kong and Beijing, with higher prices to be expected during Chinese holidays such as Chinese New Year and the Mid Autumn Festival. Take a look at current rates at Zuji, which generally boasts the best prices.

1. Seasonal Travel

Beijing is a long way north of Hong Kong, and during the winter the temperature plummets with buckets full of snow dumped onto the city. Naturally, flights to Beijing are cheaper during the off season, which runs roughly from November to April. Remember, Chinese New Year and other traditional Chinese festivals see planes packed with Hong Kongers visiting family, and ticket prices will be considerably higher.

2. Shenzhen Airport

Flights from Hong Kong to Beijing and China are still not wholly considered as domestic, and as a result, prices are artificially high. For a cheaper deal, take the roughly two hour journey to Shenzhen Airport, just across the Hong Kong – China border. Flights tend to be up to 30% cheaper.

3. Zuji.com

If you're looking for a weekend break to Beijing or other points in China, Zuji offers some excellent value package deals out of Hong Kong, including flights and hotels. Typically these are two night, three day deals, although they offer longer stays and flight only deals as well.

4. Fly Dragonair

Consistently the best flight offers come from Cathay Pacific subsidiary Dragon Air. Booking at least two weeks in advance is the key to a good deal. Dragonair also offer package deals, combining flights and hotels.

5. Olympic Travel Between Hong Kong and Beijing

If you’re planning to jump into Beijing through Hong Kong for the Olympics, you would be well advised to think about booking now. As the gateway to China, thousands of travellers are likely to use Hong Kong as a transfer point, and flights are likely to be inundated. Book early, if you haven’t already. Hong Kong is likely to lay on extra flights to the Chinese capital closer to the start date, contact airlines such as Dragon Air who will have up to date information.
