Hong Kong events range from the world’s biggest rugby tournament to art walks, horse racing and a movie festival that’s the envy of Asia.

Hong Kong Events 2009

  • Hong Kong Arts Festival – February 6th - March 8th
    The premier celebration of dance, theatre, classical music and opera in the city which attracts blockbuster names from both China and the World.

  • Man Hong Literary Festival – March 8th – 18th
    This growing festival features book readings and meetings with heavyweights such as Margret Atwood and Simon Schama.

    • Hong Kong Art Walk: March 11th
      Sponsored by Hong Kong’s increasing number of private art galleries, this is arguably the best tour of Chinese contemporary art anywhere in the world.


    • Hong Kong International Film Festival: March 21st – April 2nd
      Asia’s answer to Cannes? With 250 screenings from over 50 countries and John Woo, Wong Kar-wai and Jackie Chang strutting down the red carpet this is a must for film buffs.

    • Hong Kong Rugby Sevens: March 27th – 29th
      The biggest booze up in the city set around the world’s biggest rugby sevens tournament. Unmissable.

    • Le French May: May 1st – June 8th
      Everything French, from Louis Vuitton expos to cinema, theatre and fresh in from Paris chefs cooking up gallic inspired gourmand feasts.

    • Lan Kwai Fong Beerfest: May 24th – 25th
      Hong Kong’s answer to mardi gras, as the cobbled streets of Lan Kwai Fong are thronged with, floats, bands and booths pouring brews from around the world.

    • Hong Kong International Kung Fu Festival: July 22nd – August 6th
      Celebrating Hong Kong’s role in the development of martial arts, the festival hosts demonstrations and exhibitions as well as free classes in a number of disciplines.

    • Hong Kong Ani Comics and Game Fair: August 12th – 16th
      Outside of Japan, the Hong Kong Ani comics and Game Fair is one the region’s biggest exhibitions of comics and anime related swag.

    • Rockit: October 1st – 2nd
      Hardly a match for the regional competition, Hong Kong’s only outdoor music is nevertheless a decent attempt at capturing the spirit of the summer festivals in Europe. Expect a line up of local punk, rock and pop bands with a handful of international names.

    • Hong Kong Cricket Sixes: October 31st – November 1st
      Another sports event which serves as an excuse for a party; the cricket sixes are a fast paced version of the game with the Hong Kong event pulling in the likes of Brian Lara and Andrew Flintoff in past years.

    • Halloween in Hong Kong: throughout September until October 31st
      Halloween in Hong Kong is an increasingly celebrated event, with Disneyland, Ocean Park and the Avenue of Stars all putting on shows for kids. Adults looking to let out the monster in them can try the street party in Lan Kwai Fong.

    • Hong Kong Open Golf Tournament: November 12th – 15th
      This big ticket tournament is part of the European Tour and past winners have included Padraig Harrington and Colin Montgomerie.

    • Christmas in Hong Kong: December
      Hong Kong may not be a Christian country, but with thousands of expats and a population of shopping mad locals, it’s still a major event. Expect concerts, shopping sales and the Tourism board’s Santa themed Winterfest.

    • Cathay Pacific International Races – December 14th
      In a city that can’t stay away from the track, the biggest race meet of the year is big news. Expect hordes of punters crowded in to watch some of the best jockeys and horses in the world.
