Macau hostels are hard to find, the back packer revolution never really landed here and truly cheap rooms are at a premium. There are really only three Macau hostels, all reviewed below, and each of these is firmly pitched to different guests with varying wallets and tastes.
In general it's better to stay in one of Hong Kong's many cheap guesthouses and hostels and take a day trip to Macau, which takes little over an hour.
1. Augusters Lodge
Modelled on the budget guesthouses found in Hong Kong, Augusters offers spartan budget accommodation in a central location. Rooms are predictably boxy, many without windows, and the beds will put the put an iron rod in your back, however clean bathrooms and in room air con mean all the backpacker basics are here.- Prices: Check rates now

2. San Va Hospedaria
Macau’s age old flophouse, the Hospedaria has been around for the best part of a century, proving a magnet for travellers, dropouts and even filmmakers. Set in a colonial Portuguese building on the atmospheric Rua de Felicidade, the building creaks with charm, unfortunately so do most of the fixtures and fittings. Bedrooms and dorms offer little more than a bed and are separated by paper thin partitions that don’t even manage to reach the ceiling. At night the snoring can be deafening. Squat toilets, leering receptionists and hit and miss hot water are other complaints. Nevertheless, the atmosphere is reminiscent of backpacking Bombay in the 70’s and the price is always right.- Prices: MOP$100

3. Ole London Hotel
By far the most upmarket of Macau’s hostel options, and more like a hotel than a hostel, Ole London is set in a recently refurbished building near Macau’s inner harbour. Like the exterior, most rooms have also been visited by the painters and decorators and come fitted with LCD TV’s, baths and simple IKEA color schemes. The new upmarket theme means there are no longer any dormitories. In return for the swanky service, you’ll be expected to shell out much more money than at the properties above, although prices are still very fair.- Prices: Check rates now
