Despite the bad press about Hong Kong's philistine lack of culture, theatre does relatively well in the city of skyscrapers. Broadway this isn't but the combination of big name international groups staging plays and the willingness of local groups to stage innovative productions of both Chinese and Western plays encompassing contemporary and classical makes for a huge amount of variety and quality.
There are probably more western plays staged here than anywhere else in Asia while local and regional theatre groups can get away with staging plays that deal with controversial subjects - subjects they might not be able to tackle within their own country.
