Hong Kong Handover Celebrations and Chairman Mao
As the July 1st, 10th anniversary of the Hong Kong handover creeps ever closer, a number of Hong Kong attractions are hosting special ceremonies, or launching dedicated promotions.
One of those is Hong Kong’s Madame Tussauds. Located on Hong Kong’s exclusive Peak, the attraction is launching an exhibition of six prominent Chinese figures to commemorate the handover celebrations.
Set for a spot in the limelight is Dr Sun Yat-sen, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Wen Jiabao, Yang Liwei and controversially Mao Zedong, also known as Chairman Mao. The exhibition of Mao has caused somewhat of a stir, as the exhibition is entitled ‘Chinese Leaders and Heroes’.
While Mao no-doubt left his mark on China, some are arguing that an exhibition entitled ‘Villainous Leaders’ rather than heroes would be more appropriate. While some argue that the word leader in the exhibition allows Mao’s inclusion, none of the other waxworks have as murky a background as the Chairman.
Do you think it is appropriate for Chairman Mao to appear in an exhibition entitled ‘Chinese Leaders and Heroes’? Take part in our vote, and/or leave a comment below.
