Tiananmen Square Vigil - June 4th

Friday June 1, 2007

June 4th marks the 18th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. The vent shook Hong Kong to it’s core eighteen years ago, as the colony was preparing to be handed back to the Chinese.

Hong Kongers were so shaken that many sought new passports in the US, Canada and Australia, while both the stock market and real estate took huge losses. People were petrified that China would not honour the one country, two system principle that had been negotiated.

Since the year of the incident, 1989, Hong Kong has marched to remember those killed in the incident, while more recently the march has been used to demand universal suffrage and democracy in Hong Kong.

You can join the expected 50,000 Hong Kongers for a candlelight vigil to commemorate those killed at Tiananmen and support Hong Kong democracy at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay, 8pm on June 4th.
