New Year Festivities

Saturday December 30, 2006

The New Year is imminent, and Hong Kong is gearing up into party mode.

New Year Headquarters

Hong Kong’s equivalent of New York’s Times Square is Times Square. No that’s not a misprint; Hong Kong has its very own mini version of its American big brother. Stowed away in Causeway Bay, the square will be heaving with bodies at midnight, and if you want to get anywhere near the clock tower you will need to arrive early. Unlike celebrations around the world, the festivities at Times Square are unfortunately a little light on actual entertainment, and you won’t find any celebrities or fireworks. Nevertheless, if New Year means a crush of people and bells chiming, albeit fake ones, head for Times Square in Causeway Bay.

Clock and Flaps

New York also provides the ingredients for the second biggest event of the evening. Clockenflap, the famed New York DJ unit, will be spinning in the New Year at Skitz bar in Wan Chai. The Turntables will start whirling from 10pm, until 7am, and cost $150 at the door. Skitz Bar, 42-46 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai. www.clockenflap.com for more details.

Expat Party

The Majority of ex-pat revellers will be in and around the pubs and bars in Lan Kwai Fong and Wan Chai. Expect extortionate cover charges at many of the bars, although several in Lan Kwai Fong are promising to stay cover free; and if you’re really strapped for cash, there is always Lan Kwai Fong’s 7-Eleven.

Have a Happy New Year.
