Internet Problem

Saturday December 30, 2006

Hong Kong is currently experiencing severe internet connection problems, due to the earthquakes in and around Taiwan over Christmas. Several underwater cables are inoperative and although the problem is currently being worked on, it may take weeks before all connections are working again. As a result, many Hong Kong based websites are unavailable and you may find some website links on this site unresponsive, the site itself will remain operative.

UPDATE 12/30: In what is turning into a soap opera, one of the two ships that set out to fix the cables has developed engine trouble and returned to a Taiwanese port. Although traffic has been improving, thanks to the use of proxies, locals are predicting doom when businesses return to work on the 2nd and 3rd - stay tuned.

UPDATE 1/2: Hong Kong is back at work and doomsday predictions have been disproved. Most major sites are now accessible from the rest of the world, although individual users in the city are still having severe difficulties. All international phone lines are fully operational.
